Kuwait TV Case Study

Situation Analysis
The Ministry of Information MOI (Kuwait TV and News department) archived materials are recorded on films and various tape format from more than 40 years ago. Some of these materials are in black & white others are colored.

Problem definition
Archived material with an age of more than 40 years is subject for being lost or corrupted due to improper storing and ageing factors.

Ethical Dilemma
This material is considered Kuwait heritage and history. Therefore, it needs to be archived safely as a national cause.

Solution proposed and implemented by Gulf Media

"Go Digital"

The Gulf Media project of improving the material quality and archiving them workflow goes as follows:

  • A complete restoration phase that works on cleaning the material using professional cleaning, rejuvenating and polishing machines. We restore and transfer the materials currently held in archives that has deteriorated beyond the point at which it can be viewed without artifacts that annoys the viewer, to media less prone to degradation “Digital Media”. (I will include some pictures from the basement).
  • Archiving process of the different types of media to up to date digital format
  • The restoration output is a digital Betacam tape that will be ingested to the system then the material is handled by nonlinear editing stations to reach the final status before archiving.
  • Finally the material on the archive could be played to air in less than two    minutes with hundreds of clips which could provide 24 hours live tapeless operation.
  • When constructing the archive system, the customers has the ability to establish their own thesaurus, indexing, and their own cataloging system.
  • Browse stations are distributed all over the TV premises in order to facilitate browsing the archive contents. Moreover, the browsing stations have got the ability to make rough edits (EDLs).
